A director of curriculum based in Illinois, Tara Kristoff draws upon experience as the former principal of the Lincoln Elementary School in Brookfield, Illinois. Committed to writing curricula that maintains current standards, former principal Tara Kristoff completed professional development training through Next Generation Science Standards, an effort to introduce new standards of teaching science in schools across the nation.
Launched in 2013, Next Generation Science Standards collaborates with the National Research Council to develop better science curricula in grades kindergarten through 12. Here are some of the goals behind the initiative.
To Get Students Excited About STEM
Compared with other countries, the U.S. has fewer students who claim STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) majors at every level. The new standards aim to get students excited about STEM.
Outdated Standards
Before the Next Generation Science Standards effort, the standards for scientific instruction in schools hadn’t been reviewed in 15 years.
College and Career Preparation
After taking Next Generation Science Standards curricula, high school students will be better prepared to excel in STEM studies in college. Employers will also find more highly skilled candidates to fill available positions.
